Background
I was raised in a university family in Decatur, GA. I started high school in the DeKalb County public system, at Druid Hills High School, and then switched to St. Pius X Catholic High School. I attended Georgetown University, where I earned a BA in American Studies; and then attended Northwestern’s Medill School of Journalism, where I earned my MS.
My first few years after graduating Medill were spent working across a range of genres and with a variety of responsibilities. With experience as a reporter, editor, photographer and designer, I co-founded Book: The Magazine for the Reading Life.
Next, I developed media conglomerate VNU’s first-ever all-digital product, TheBookStandard.com, in partnership with Nielsen BookScan, while overseeing VNU’s literary portfolio, including Kirkus Reviews.
Independent consulting and start-up and editorial projects followed, including a return stint as publisher of Kirkus handling the sale of the title; and the launch of DocumentaryNotes.com, a documentary-arts review platform.
Meanwhile, my wife and I were fortunate enough to welcome kids into our family—and with them came my education education about and engagement with New York City’s public and parochial school systems. Support of the kids’ schools led to a series of volunteer engagements, including class parent; Community Education Council representation; the co-presidency of the Parents’ Association for the Bronx High School of Science and for MS54/Booker T Washington; and serving on the parent committee for Dominican Academy’s accreditation by the New York State Association of Independent Schools.
Today, my familiarity with and understanding of both the public and Catholic high school options available to students and families makes me uniquely capable of helping you with guidance, insight and strategic advice during the challenging—but exciting!—transition from middle school/eighth grade to high school.
